First shown as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is now headed for production. Far from a fuel-sipping economy car, this gasoline-electric hybrid is designed to take the edge off fuel costs without giving up much in the way of SUV practicality or performance.
Prototypes spotted in Death Valley reveal few significant styling changes from the recently introduced X6 other than an obvious bulge in the hood. Subsequent photos show a maze of electrical connections beneath the protruding sheet metal. All the extra hardware is necessary to control what’s expected to be a two-mode hybrid system similar to what’s found in GM’s current Tahoe and Escalade Hybrid SUVs. BMW partnered with GM and Daimler in the development of the system.
The two-mode system essentially combines electric motors with a sophisticated automatic transmission and traditional gasoline engine. It is able to provide pure electric power like a Prius, but most of the time it’s a mix of both gasoline and electric power. A fuel mileage improvement of around 10-15 percent is about all you can expect given the added weight of the hybrid system’s batteries combined with the X6’s already substantial curb weight.
With full production of the V8-powered X6 just now starting to ramp up to full speed, the introduction of the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (as BMW calls it) is probably at least a year away. Expect a substantial price bump, one that could put this hybrid BMW’s base price in the $70,000 range. So much for saving money on gas.

Good luck trying to sell this with the credit mess that we are in - if i had to get a hybrid rather wait on the new insight next year or even the prius even if I did have $70k to spend wouldn’t waste it on this car especially the way gas has been lately.

The European automakers are only jumping into the hybrid market so they won’t like “anti-green”. Europeans have regularly scoffed at hyrids as a bad joke. Their diesel models are always getting 40% better mileage than their gasoline powered siblings and they put out less CO2.

chronic2112: that’s just to make rich people feel better about themselves. if they really wanted to save the world or our environment, they’d go buy a civic, prius or something else that is fuel efficient. face it, this car is a contradiction in terms. the hybridization is pure marketing and for show. this car is a high performance car and don’t let the “hybrid” part fool you.

The point is people can buy a fast bmw that has outstanding performance, and they can say they are doing something for mother earth because it’s a hybrid. (even though it only gives 15% better fuel economy). I would buy one if I could afford it.

i.e. they’re making things unnecessarily difficult and silly. BMW sells fast, expensive cars. people buy them because they have a lot of money and they want something fast. people with a lot of money generally don’t care about fuel economy. hybridizing is done to make things efficient (slow, low acceleration). ere go, why bother with hybridizing a fast, expensive vehicle? the whole thing is upside down and silly, dman.
